Byron Crafting Dreamlike Worlds from Memory, Travel, and Wonder

Some artists paint what they see. Others paint what they imagine. For UAE-based Filipino visual artist Byron, both worlds exist at the same time.
His work lives between careful observation and surreal imagination, where ordinary places transform into dreamlike landscapes and quiet moments reveal unexpected stories. Inspired by travel, memory, and the strange poetry of everyday life, Byron creates worlds that invite viewers to slow down, look closer, and embrace uncertainty rather than fear it.
Rather than defining art by technique alone, Byron sees being an artist as returning to something many adults have forgotten.
"I call myself an artist to give a label into what we forgot to do once we grew up—to look, really look, and to be drawn into the quiet moments."
That philosophy has become the foundation of his creative voice. Feeling like a misfit growing up, Byron found comfort not in escaping reality, but in reshaping it. Through surreal, storybook-inspired worlds filled with strange yet familiar imagery, he explores life's uncertainty, nostalgia, and the beauty hidden within the unexpected.
Drawing inspiration from artist Paul Klee's belief that once said, “you draw the minerals of these experiences from its roots - things observed, read, told, and felt and slowly processing them into new leaves.”
Growing Through Places, People, and Change
Born and raised in the southern suburbs of Manila, Byron spent much of his childhood in a time when being offline meant having endless opportunities to imagine. Drawing, writing stories, and embracing boredom became the foundation of his creative life.
Although his professional path eventually led him into landscape design, urban design, and master planning, those disciplines only strengthened his ability to visualize spaces, imagine possibilities, and create narratives through environments.
The pandemic became his turning point.
It was during those quieter years that Byron rediscovered painting and illustration, choosing to pursue them with greater intention while continuing his professional career.
His journey has since taken him from the tropical landscapes of the Philippines and Singapore to the desert environment of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Each place has left its imprint on his artistic language.
Travel continues to play an essential role in his practice. Every city, culture, and landscape becomes another chapter in his visual vocabulary, while the realities of living abroad as an Overseas Filipino Worker have added deeper emotional layers to his work.
"Stories of my nomadic life, being a corporate efficiency slave, and uprooting myself from places I both loved and hated eventually distilled the voice and style that informed my work."
Where Dark Wonder Meets Everyday Life
Byron's creative process always begins in the real world.
Whether through urban sketching, traveling, painting, or simply observing people and places, these experiences become the raw materials for something much larger. Even with moments of procrastination and everyday distractions, he believes genuine observation remains at the center of meaningful creation.
From these fragments of reality emerge imaginative worlds that Byron describes as dark wonder, infused with vintage weird core nostalgia and warm science fiction aesthetics.
Within these dreamlike environments lies a deeper reflection on modern life, our desire for certainty, efficiency, and control despite living in an unpredictable world.
Rather than forcing every piece into a rigid concept, Byron embraces uncertainty within the creative process itself.
"The art that I do is not of rigid design, but a testament of letting go, the themes and beauty emerge as a byproduct of something divine, where I simply act as the instrument."
A New Chapter: The World of Paperboy
This year marks an exciting chapter in Byron's artistic journey. He is currently developing The World of Paperboy, an ambitious narrative picture book that expands his surreal universe into long form storytelling. Beyond the studio, audiences can also meet him throughout the UAE convention circuit, including Artist Alley appearances at MEFCC 2026 and Tabletop.Me.
Visitors will have the opportunity to experience his original artworks firsthand and discover exclusive merchandise, including The Starfarer's Deck, a custom collection of 100 illustrated collectible cards that reflects his fascination with storytelling, exploration, and imaginative world building. And while details remain under wraps, Byron hints at another exciting project arriving later this year.
"There is also a secret project dropping in Q4 that I can't wait to share... so keep your eyes peeled!"
Whether creating murals, paintings, illustrated worlds, or collectible art, Byron continues to remind us that imagination is not something we leave behind in childhood. Instead, it becomes a lens through which we can better understand ourselves, the places we inhabit, and the beautifully strange nature of everyday life.
About the Artist
Byron is a Filipino visual artist currently based in the United Arab Emirates. His practice spans concept art, illustration, and painting, combining traditional media, including watercolor, gouache, oil, and acrylic, with digital techniques.
Inspired by the places he has lived, traveled, and wandered through, his work transforms everyday observations into dreamlike landscapes filled with curious machines, poetic narratives, and quiet moments of wonder. His creations can be found in murals, libraries, public spaces, and perhaps even in places where you would least expect to encounter them.
Outside the studio, Byron enjoys writing, reading, gardening, and exploring offbeat destinations, always searching for new stories waiting to be discovered.
